The Grasslands area consists of rolling hills, scattered scrub trees, mountains and great big skies. Cattle roam free in the area and herds of Pronghorn are a common sight. A few birds linger in the winter months particularly hawks and Western Kingbirds of which we saw many. We boon-docked in a remote area of the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area where only five other sites are located. The quiet and serenity were just what we needed. Our days were spent hiking, biking and sitting in the sun. The temperatures were in the seventies during the day and down to near freezing at night.
The three Muskedeers. Pronghorn are actually a unique breed.
I never leave home without my lengthening mascara.
This photo is beside the word tranquil in the dictionary.
The remains of barns, corrals and farmhouse of the pioneer Empire Ranch were worth exploring. They are located within the park. The homestead is currently under renovation. A beautiful stand of huge Cottonwood Trees runs behind the farm. A couple of months ago, a grassfire swept through the woods and sadly, many of the “former giants” have had to be taken down.
Main farmhouse, adobe and wood exterior is being restored inside and out.
Smaller buildings on the property are constructed with adobe bricks.
The Grasslands were a beautiful place to hike around. Conservation of grasses and wildlife are insured with a variety of programs. The most beautiful aspect of the park was the constantly changing light across the grasses and distant mountains. Our senses were charmed by the earthy scent of the grass and gentle whispering of the fronds. Observing the subtle changes measured by the winds and the clouds was the perfect recipe for relaxation.
We saw only footprints of Coati.
An unseasonal snowfall greeted us one morning and later in the day, a blizzard swooped in. Winds were bitter on our hike.
The nearby town of Patagonia was recommended as a place unchanged by time so we drove over for a short visit. The town has a bohemian feel to it and the old western buildings are maintained to hold their charm.
We had a good lunch here and took home carrot cake for Chris’s Birthday.
We cannot believe that they allow camp fires in the park.
Leaving the Grasslands.
Happy Trails… CC and Dixie!
